Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a Nomad day?
A typical Nomad day begins at 7 am and ends at sundown. Days are spent with activities such as hiking or rafting, with breaks and free time throughout. Tents are set up and meals are begun before sundown. Evenings are spent with activities around a campfire or under the stars, enjoying each other’s company and our splendid surroundings.
Can I call home?
Participants have the opportunity to call home during the transition from backpacking to rafting sections of the trip. We encourage participants to minimize their calls in order to fully immerse themselves in their Nomad experience.
What is the food like?
Delicious, healthy food is central to Nomad trips. We love to cook creatively and eat in the backcountry…food just seems to taste better after a full day of activity, enjoyed in a beautiful setting. Pesto pasta, rice and beans, pizza, and pancakes are just some of the foods you will learn to prepare. Backcountry meals will be supplemented by fresh food whenever possible. And...how could we forget to mention the GORP?
What if I have never camped before?
Nomad designs its trips according to your experience. We welcome all skill levels, will teach you the basics and then some, and go from there. You will return home a camping veteran, with the ability and know-how to embark upon your own adventures. Amaze family and friends with your knowledge of how to lick a bowl clean, set up a tent blindfolded, and concoct myriad uses of duct tape. Blue pasta water and …are just some of the surprises the backcountry has to offer you.
How heavy are the backpacks?
A typical, full backpack can weigh up to 60 pounds, depending on your size. You will not be asked to carry more than 1/2 of your body weight or more than your capacity. As veteran backpackers, Nomad guides pride themselves in mastering the “art of packing,” and will assist you in shedding the weight of your pack to a comfortable size, while still allowing for your favorite luxury item.
How challenging are Nomad trips?
Each trip will offer its own challenges and risks, often varying according to individual levels of comfort and experience.
Who will be on my trip?
Each Nomad trip has no more than eight participants and two guides. Students come from all across the country and share a desire for adventure, challenge, and fun.
Can I sign up with a friend?
You are welcome to sign up with a friend. When registering, please let us know.
How is Nomad different than other adventure travel companies?
Each participant is guaranteed his/her input in guiding the experience. Our journeys are journeys created together, each as unique as the individuals on it.
